Use case: heavy-duty pushbutton for outdoor applications

Date: 15/09/2026

When a customer, specialized in garage doors and dock shelters, was developing equipment for an outdoor loading area, one of the most important details was : the pushbutton installed next to the truck had to remain reliable in a particularly exposed environment. Its role in the application is to trigger an alert if the truck starts moving unexpectedly. Exposed to water, dirt and potential impacts, the switch needed to combine high sealing performance, mechanical robustness and reliable operation. For this use case, APEM recommended the ES series heavy-duty pushbutton, with IP69K sealing, IK10 impact resistance, and a specific cable and connector adapted to the customer's installation

A demanding outdoor loading dock environment

Loading dock equipment is continuously exposed to challenging conditions. Components installed outside can face rain, humidity, dust, dirt, intensive cleaning and accidental impacts from nearby vehicles or equipment.

In this application, the pushbutton is installed next to the truck loading area. Its purpose is to trigger an alert if the truck starts moving when it should remain stationary.

The customer therefore needed a high-quality switch capable of maintaining reliable operation in a particularly exposed location.

Key requirements for the mushroom pushbutton

High resistance to impacts

Equipment around loading docks can easily be subjected to knocks and accidental impacts during everyday operations. With IK10 impact resistance, the ES series provides the mechanical robustness required for exposed industrial installations where a conventional pushbutton could be more vulnerable to damage.

Protection against water and contaminants

Because the pushbutton is installed outdoors, sealing was one of the customer's main requirements. The ES series provides protection up to IP69K, making it suitable for environments exposed to water, dust and demanding cleaning conditions. For this project, APEM also supplied a specific cable and connector solution, with an overmoulded and epoxy-sealed rear connection to help maintain protection behind the panel.

Clear visual feedback and markings

Operators need to identify the state and purpose of a control quickly.

The ES series can provide visual feedback when actuated, while customizable markings make it possible to clearly identify the pushbutton's function within the installation.

Contact configurations for monitoring

Depending on the control architecture, the ES series can be configured with NO/NC or two NC contacts.

The dual NC configuration provides two independent contact paths, enabling the customer's control system to implement redundancy and contact monitoring where required.

Why the ES series was selected

The customer was ultimately convinced by the quality and robustness of the ES series.

For this outdoor loading dock application, the main benefits include:

  • IK10 impact resistance for demanding industrial environments

  • IP69K sealing for outdoor installations

  • Overmoulded and epoxy-sealed rear connection

  • Special cable and connector adapted to the customer's system

  • Visual actuation feedback

  • Customizable markings

  • NO/NC or dual NC contact configurations

  • Heavy-duty construction for intensive use

The result is a pushbutton solution designed to withstand the environmental and mechanical constraints encountered around loading docks while integrating directly into the customer's existing equipment.

💡Expert tip

For applications exposed to particularly rough operating conditions, the ES series is a strong option when high quality, sealing and mechanical robustness are key selection criteria.
