EL Lamp

EL Lamp

ELECTROLUMINESCENT (EL) DISPLAY is a type of backlit display which is best for producing uniform light over a large area.

Lighting is created by sandwiching a layer of electroluminescent material between two layers of conductors.  When the current flows, the layer of material emits radiation in the form of visible light.  EL works by exciting atoms by passing an electric current through them causing them to emit photons.  The light color emitted can be changed by varying the material being excited.   APEM integrates thin film EL components into membrane switches and stainless steel keypads.

EL Backlighting Benefits

  • Customize any size or shape
  • Thin profile and flexible (<=0.1mm)
  • Requires low energy
  • Multiple colors available
  • Uniform, luminous output
  • Connection can be located anywhere on the EL lamp

EL Displays

APEM uses Thin Film Electroluminescence (TFEL) in the design and production of membrane switches. It is typically used when a large area of the graphic needs to be illuminated. An EL lamp half life varies between 3000-5000 hours depending on the quality of phosphor used. APEM’s membrane switches with EL lamp illumination are used widely on medical equipment, robotic controls, agricultural equipment, and military training equipment.
