Embossing is a process of forming and/or deforming the graphic overlay. Special tools are used to achieve this. It aids in tactile response and allows the user to easily locate the keypad. It can also be used for aesthetic effect.
Tactile feedback of keys can be provided by embossing the top PET layer of the membrane keypad or embedding metal snap domes, polyester domes or forming the graphic layer.
When a non-tactile membrane is required, two layers are not necessary for the keypad. The domes and a dome retainer are not needed as they are in a tactile application, thus a simpler construction.
